WOMEN’S DIVISION

Oakura: On Tuesday night the branth activities for the past six months were concluded with a dance in the hall. There was a good attendance, and with the aid of music by Mr. Boulton, euchre, and home-cooked supper the branch funds benefited. During the time since the annual meeting, the monthly meetings have been well attended and the enthusiasm of members has been steadily maintained. Contributions towards the relief of distress have been: A family in the district was assisted by a pound day and a community quilt, material being contributed by members, and the work done by Mesdames W. Morris, L. Brown and Blakeley. Mrs. McGregor also donated a similar quilt of her own making for another family. A child’s quilt of peggy squares was made and given to the Plunket Society, with a donation in money. Demonstrations have been given, Mrs. O. Penwarden, Okato, showing the making of cushions from coloured felt. Mrs. Beale gave a talk on poisons and antidotes, and a remit was forwarded to the provincial executive that school teachers be provided with information regarding poisonous berries and leaves likely to be eaten by children. Instances were given by several members. Reports of conference and provincial executive meetings were given by the president:, and of the National Council of Women’s conference. Competitions in cooking were held each month, and the' branch undertook to dispose of goods for the Disabled Soldiers’ Association. Several members were regular suppliers for the shop at New Plymouth. A dance last Tuesday marked the ninth birthday of the branch.

Cardiff: The monthly meeting of the branch was held on Wednesday afternoon when Mrs. D. Brunton presided over a large attendance. The president welcomed visitors from the Pembroke Road branch. During the afternoon items were rendered by Mrs. P. Marchant (piano solo), Miss M. Brunton (song), and Miss Nesta Belcher (recitation). Mrs. L. Hunt gave an interesting lecture on forms of handwork and Mrs. Belcher demonstrated the art of stencilling. Members were interested in a display of articles made from'flour bags. The branch decided to give £2 to the school for the contemplated improvements. The competition for the best articles made from flour bags was won by Mrs. W. Myers with Mrs. Belcher second. On behalf of the visitors Mrs. Belcher thanked the branch for the pleasant afternoon and extended to members a cordial invitation to visit the Pembroke Road meeting. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Hoskin, H. Wickstead and W. Myers.

Mokoia-Whakamara: There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Mokoia-Whakamara branch on Wednesday afternoon. Several visitors were present from Hawera and Wanganui. Mrs. P, Buchrell presided, Competitions

for the best plate of pikelets and best sponge were held, the prize for the pikelets going to Mrs. A- Langley and Mrs. J. Potter (first equal) and Mrs. J. Main winning that for the sponge. Mr. Findlay, Tokaora, gave a lecture on Douglas social credit. <
