W.C.T.U. ACTIVITIES. ' NEW PLYMOUTH SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Wednesday. The president, Miss Drew, occupied the chair. Reports from all deparments were incorporated in a concise yearly repbrt read by the secretary, Mrs. Chapman. The election of officers resulted: President, Miss Drew, M.A.; recording secretary, Mrs. Chapman; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Jemison; treasurer, Mrs. Green. In reviewing the work of the past year it was considered by all present that much good work had been put through, the work of the seaman’s rest committee being prominent. Work among the Maoris by Mrs. Tuffery was eulogised, four Sunday schools being well attended. Visits to sick ones and general knowledge of temperature and hygiene service had been given. The youth membership of the union had steadily grown and there was a general improvement in temperance ideas. ■ Birthday bouquets had been given to the most elderly members and visits had been paid to those sick in hospital. Notable days had been suitably celebrated and funds supplied for the union’s work' by bring and buy afternoons. A maternity bag had been stocked and handed over to the district nurse. • COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. NEW PLYMOUTH CELEBRATION. • A pleasant evening was spent in . St. Mary’s hall on Monday, when Mr. and Mrs. F. J. King entertained 200 guests. The occasion' was the coming-of-age of their, daughter Launa. The guest of honour was attired in a white lace and georgette frock with cherry tonings and carried a posy of red carnations, sweet peas and maidenhair fem given by Mrs. S. Campbell. Mrs. King to receive her guests wore a wine lace and georgette frock. Dancing was the main feature of the evening, interspersed with items. A song was given by Miss MacDonald and two Highland dances by Miss Eulie Sturgeon. Music for the dancing was played by Miss M. Martin and Mr. J. Harne. A balloon dance, which created a good deal of amusement, was won by Miss E. Burkett and Mr. P. Adlam, a Monte Carlo waltz by Miss M. Duncan and Mr. N. Parker, and a mystery Gay Gordons by Miss J. Bennock and Mr. V. Dravitski. Euchre for non-dancers was played in the supper-room. Miss L. King received a large gold key, being the last one to receive a travelling parcel. The decorations in the supper-room were carried out in red and white. The two-tiered cake, which was iced by Mrs. Ross, was surmounted by 21 red candles. The toast of the guest of honour was

proposed by Mr. Farmer and responded to by Mr. K. Harrison. Mr. P. Gilbert proposed the toast of the host and hostess, Mr. King responding. The toast of the grandparents was proposed by Mr. M. Sampson and was responded to by Mr. W. R. Leighton. LEAGUE CYCLE CLUB. WOMEN'S COMMITTEE HONOURED. An enjoyable evening was spent in the Mon Desir tea rooms on Wednesday evening when the New Plymouth League Cycle Club members entertained the women’s social committee and old members at a complimentary concert, supper and dance. Guests of the evening were Mesdames H. Bocock, D. George, L. E. Smith, A. Gable, R. Wilson, A. Williams, F. Stevens, H. Snowden, J. Donaldson, H. Kay, Misses D. Snowden, G. Duffin, N. Sturmey, M. Hall and M. Beer. The old members present were Messrs. G. Beer, W. Yardley, G. Tippins, B. Tippins, J, Sceats and H. Kay. The following toasts were honoured at supper when Mr. P. M. Beer presided: “New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League” (Mr. L. E. Smith—Mr. G. D. Sole); “Social Committee” (Mr. G. M. Beer—Mr. J. Donaldson); “Old Members” (Mr. R.i Browne —Mr. W. Yardley); “The President” (Mr. H. W. Bocock—Mr. Beer); “The Secretary” (Mr. Des George—Mr. H. W. Bocock); “Mr. Ben Tippins” (Mr. J. R. Sceats—Mr. Tippins); “The Artists” (Mr. H. W. Bocock —Mr. L. G. Kohn); “Miss K. Brown” (Mr. R. D. Sole—Mr. G. D. Sole). At the conclusion of supper the president presented trophies won during the road season. Songs were contributed by

Miss B. Turnbull, Miss Russen and Mr. L. G. Kohn (Inglewood), instrumental items by Mrs. L. Davies (piano), D. Stafford (clarinet), and Des George (saxophone). Mr. Rex Brown was master of ceremonies and dance music was played by Mrs. L. Davies, Mr. L. E. Smith and Mr. D. Stafford. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Snowden and Mr. Bocock. BIG DANCE AT CARDIFF. The dance organised by the Cardiff Hikers’ and .Harriers’ Glee Club proved a popular function, there being a large number present. The music was played by Vinsen’s Ambassadors and the master of ceremonies were Messrs. M. Wickham and C. Hawkes. Extras were played by Miss M. Prince, Mrs. Smith and Mr. V. Henry.
