MYSTERIOUS GROUP WORKING TO SAVE BEAUTY SPOTS A MASKED woman, described on her card as “Kate O’Brien the Nark,” called at the offices of the National Trust, Buckingham Palace Gardens, London, recently, and when shown into the room of Mr Matheson, the secretary, handed him » Bank of England note for £5OO. She explained that was in part payment of the purchase and. endowment of the Newtown Old Town Hall, Isle of Wight, which. “Ferguson’s Gang” is presenting to the Trust. “Kate O’Brien” left without removing her mask. • ' . Some months ago " the "gang” bought and endowed Shalford Mill, near Guildford, for the Trust. The money was taken in silver to the office by two masked members of the gang, “Red Biddy” and “’Erb the Smasher.” The “gang” is believed to be. a body of 10 men and women interested in the preservation of beauty spots and historic places. Shalford Mill, which they helped to save, is an early 18th century water-mill in the village of Shalford, on the ataoasan.
