DAIRYING REPORT

LONDON PAPER’S COMMENT.' DESERVES CAREFUL STUDY. ! The main editorial in The Times, London, on October 19, discussed the report of the New Zealand Dairy Industry Commission which was tabled in the House of Representatives the previous day. “The report of the commission appointed in New Zealand to inquire into the difficulties of the dairying industry deserves careful study in this country as well as in the Dominion,” said The Times. “Most of it, though important to everyone interested in the organisation of production and marketing, is of direct concern only to New Zealand; but the section on the sale of Dominion produce in the British market inevitably raises questions which affect dairy-farmers in Great Britain, in the other Dominions, particularly in Australia, and indeed in all those countries which are accustomed to send supplies to this market. Moreover, since selling is impossible without buying, they affect also the British manufacturing industries for which the markets of those countries are important outlets. They ramify, so to put it, from the Dominion Office into the Ministry of Agriculture, the Board of Trade, the Ministry of Labour and even the Foreign Office. “Farmers in New Zealand, as in some other Dominions and in several foreign countries, have been worrying for months over the possible effect upon them of the proposals to restrict agricultural imports by quota as the most effective way to counteract the overloading of the British market and a fall in prices, ruinous both to the British and to. the overseas farmer. This anxiety finds expression, quite properly and inevitably, in the report of the commission, which urges that the New Zealand Government should take early steps to reach an understanding with Great Britain.”
