PARENTS DAY HELD

GATHERING AT MANAIA SCHOOL. INTERESTING WORK EXHIBITED. There was a very large attendance of parents and old pupils at the annual parents’ day at the Manaia school yesterday afternoon. Before the concert given by the pupils the parents had the opportunity of viewing the work done by the pupils. A very high order was attained, some of the work being excellent, and much credit goes to the teaching staff whose efforts were well rewarded. Master R. Silby read an address of welcome to parents and old pupils. The secondary school girls under Miss Reekie gave drill items, as did the standard four pupils under guidance of Miss York. All were very — - . executed. The following items were given: Selection, school orchestra, comprising 28 instruments, conducted by Mr. A. Bonetti; pianoforte duet, Mrs. Bonetti and G. Lowe; songs, Miss Chilcott’s pupils; selection, orchestra; pianoforte duet, Mrs. Bonetti and M. Anton Bonetti; songs, Miss York’s pupils; instrumental duet, Mr. Bonetti and Jim Silby; pianoforte solo, Miss J. Clague; recitation, Miss J. Power; songs, Miss Lilley’s pupils; recitation, Miss M. Stoddart; songs, Miss Wood’s pupils. The Rev. R. Miller, who apologised for the absence of the chairman of the school committee, Mr. O. T. Parry, said he was very pleased to see such a large gathering to view the work done by the pupils. He felt sure that they would be satisfied by the high standard. He congratulated the teachers oi. the concert, Mr. Bonetti for his very creditable performance with the school orchestra, and Mr. J. Browning, headmaster, for organising the afternoon. Mr. J. Browning endorsed some of Mr. Miller’s remarks. Afternoon tea was served by the girls of the high school. PERSONAL ITEMS. Opportunity to bid farewell to the Rev. C. W. and Mrs. Solomon, who leave shortly for Gonville, Wanganui, was taken on Wednesday afternoon, when the monthly meeting of the St. Aidan’s church guild was held at the home of Mrs. G. Good, Okaiawa. Tribute to the excellent work of the secretary, Mr. B. H. Parker, who had represented the association at the conference at Tirnaru, was paid by delegates at the South Taranaki School Committees Association meeting at Manaia on Thursday night. Miss Nancy Thomas, Palmerston North, was appointed to the position of district nurse at Hawera by a combined meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board, and Red Cross Society, at Hawera on Thursday. There were 10 applications for the position. Mr. H. R. W. Bunn, Hawera, has secured his radio amateur’s transmitting license. He is the first member of the Hawera Radio Society to pass the examination. Congratulations to the Hon. S. G. Smith upon his elevation to Cabinet rank were expressed at the quarterly meeting of the South Taranaki School Committees’ Association at Manaia on Friday night. Several delegates praised the work of Mr. Smith in the interests of education. Members of the Main Highways Board and the executive of the Automobile Association (South Taranaki) were entertained at the weekly luncheon of the Hawera Rotary Club yesterday. They were welcomed by the president, Mr. F. W. Homer, who introduced each in turn. Mr. Frederick Burn, who died at Hawera on Thursday, was a resident of Hawera for more than 40 years. He was a carpenter by trade and was also a member of the Plymouth Brethren, being a regular attendant at the Hawera Gospel Hall. He had been in poor health for some months. Mrs. Burn predeceased him by eight years. He is survived by six daughters—Misses Grace and Hazel Burn (Hawera), Mesdames H. McLean (Nelson), J. Patchell (Te Hoe), D. McKenzie (Wellington) and A. Macßeth (Hawera) and one son—Mr. J. Burn (Toko). GENERAL ITEMS. Subsidy for Lorries? He believed that the board should pay a subsidy to the dairy farmer who put his goods on rubber tyres, said Mr. J. B. Murdoch, chairman of the Hawera County Council, in a discussion on the transport question with the Main Highways Board yesterday. The carts were tearing away the sides of the sealed roads and the lorries definitely aided in making road maintenance charges less. Secondary Highway. The Ahipaipaipa Road had been declared a secondary highway, said the chairman of the Main Highways Board, Mr. C. F. McKenzie, when a question was asked at a discussion between the Hawera County Council and the board at Hawera yesterday. Extension of Highways. Thanks to the Highways Board for consideration in the past, particularly in the extension of highways within the county, were expressed to the Main Highways Board by Mr. W. G. Belton, chairman of the Patea County Council, when the Main Highways Board visited Patea yesterday afternoon.

Deviation Inspected. An inspection of the Tangahoe deviation at present in progress was made by members of the Main Highways Board during a visit to South Taranaki yesterday. Favourable comment was made on the progress of the work and surprise is expressed at its size. Old Boys’ Smoke Concert

The annual smoke concert of the Hawera branch of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School Old Boys’ Association was held last night, there being a large attendance. There were many visitors, and songs, toasts and stories were enjoyed. The proceeds are to be devoted to the scholarship fund. Normanby Road Widening.

An assurance that as soon as definite proposals are outlined, the board would be prepared to grant a subsidy was given by the Main Highways Board when a petition for the widening of the Nor-manby-Okaiawa main highway was presented by the Normanby To'wn Board yesterday. The piece of road is about 10 chains in length and assistance in widening to the full width was asked. WAVERLEY ROADS. IMPROVING CHESTER STREET. i When tlie Main Highways Board visited Waverley yesterday they were met by Messrs. W. Higginbottom, chairman of the Town Board, and J. E. Palmer, town clerk. In a short, informal discussion the question of sealing Chester Street, the outlet to Okotuku Road, was discussed, and the chairman of the board, Mr. C. J. McKenzie, advised the town to make application in co-oper-ation with the Patea County Council. It was stated that application had been made three years ago, but failing support, the Waverley Town Board, owing to lack of funds, had been unable to ‘ go ahead with any programme.
