SURPRISE IN TENNIS

Surprises continue in the New South Wales tennis championships, to-day’s being the defeat of Perry and Hughes (England) by Hopman and Maier in the doubles. The courts were slow after the overnight rain, and a blustering wind made conditions difficult. Perry and Hughes, after winning the first and second sets, led 5—3 and 30— love in the third Set. Perry was footfaulted in this game, and his play appeared to suffer until the end of the set, which Hopman and Maier won after a grand fight. The Englishmen’s volleying in the fourth set was ineffective, so they resorted to tossing, but Hopman and Maier’s volleying and smashing Was irresistible. Results Were:— Men’s Doubles. Semi-finals: Crawford and McGrath defeated Kirby and Quist 6—3, 10—12, 6—4, 6—4. Hopman and Maier defeated Petry and Hughes 6—B, 3 —6, 16—8, 6— 3 t 6—4. Women’s Doubles, Semi-finals: Misses Dearman and Lyle defeated Misses Hartigan and Bickerton 6—4, 6—o; Miss Round and Mrs. Hopman defeated MesdameS Westmacott and Molesworth 6—4, 6—l. Mixed Doubles. Semi-finals: Petry and Miss Round defeated Kirby and Miss Lyle 6—4, 6—4; Hopman and Mrs. Hopman defeated Menzel and Miss Bickerton 6—4, 6—4.
