POULTRY PROBLEMS

NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON CONFERENCE. Palmerston N., Nov. 28. The 32nd annual meeting of the North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association was officially opened at Palmerston North this morning by the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford. The annual report of the president, Mr. J. Brice (Palmerston North), stated that four new societies had been affiliated with the association during the past year and no societies had withdrawn their affiliation. This was a very satisfactory state of affairs. The report stated that after many difficulties had been surmounted a utility poultry standard had been established with the approval of the North and South Island associations, the New Zealand Poultry Association and six of the leading specialist clubs. The success of the standard now rested with the affiliated clubs. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit of £lO5 7s 2d. The receipts and expenditure showed a credit balance of £49 14s 2d at the bank. The practice of exhibiting poultry at all shows with sealed leg rings was endorsed. Mr. J. C. Nesfield (Auckland) said he did not think sufficient notification had been given of this point. He had had a number of birds disqualified at the Auckland show. Mr. W. P. Okey (New Plymouth) asked that the standard should be published more often. The chairman, Mr. J. T. Brice, said the cost of publication was £l5O. On the motion of Mr. J. C. Nesfield, it was decided to express regret at the action of the Hutt Valley Poultry Club in circularising affiliated clubs without the sanction of the North Island association. Mr. Nesfield said the club had circularised clubs in connection with the breach between the association and the Federation of Caged Bird Clubs. Tire annual conference of the North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association elected Mr. G. C. Thornton, Hastings, president, and Messrs. J. C. Nesfield, Auckland, and J. Paterson, Wanganui, vice-presidents. As the result of deliberations with representatives of the federation of cage bird clubs an agreement was reached bridging the gulf that had existed between the federation and the association for the last three years. The association now lifts the disqualification on breeders exhibiting canaries in federation shows.
