INSURANCE OF RELIEF WORKS. WANGANUI CLERK SENT FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Nov. 29. Norman Leslie Tyler, clerk, formerly employed by the relief works department at the Waitotara County Council offices, charged with the theft of £l5 4s in insurance moneys alleged to have been paid to him by farmers under the “over the fence” scheme, was committed for trial in February next. Detective Walsh said he had questioned accused regarding £45 8s reported to have been stolen from a cashbox. The money was kept for the payment of relief workers on October 12. Tyler, who had charge of the keys, said it must have been stolen when he was temporarily absent from the office. . Regarding receipts for farmers insurance. Tyler told the detective that he had written them out of sequence in order to keep himself supplied with change and that he had no petty cash. Tyler was shown various receipted insurance invoices and told that the farmers had paid the money to him and that the invoices had been receipted by him. Asked if he had received the monies he replied that he could not say. Tyler was shown an insurance record book and told that the detective had reason to believe that it was not the original entered up in 1933. Tyler replied that it was not the original and that he had burnt the original after copying the contents into another book. • Asked if it was an exact copy he replied that it was to the best of his knowledge. Later he said it could be described.as a revised copy.
