FATE OF THE EMDEN
CABLE MAN’S PRESENCE OF MIND.
HIS DEATH RECALLS INCIDENT.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Nov. 27.
The death has occurred of Mr. D. Farrant, superintendent of the Eastern Extension cable station on Cocos Islands when the German cruiser Emden met her fate in 1914, largely through his presence of mind. Mr. Farrant sent out a message when the Emden appeared off the island and a wireless was sent to H.M.A.S. Sydney, which left a convoy of New Zealand and Australian troops for Cocos Islands and destroyed the Emden.
