ACCESS TO BEACH

IMPROVEMENTS AT STRANDON.

WORK BY THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

“It is pleasing to see the council interesting itself in the approach to the Strandon beach,” said Mr. F. A. Coleman at a meeting of the East End Beach Reserve Committee last night in reference to the improvement of the access to the Strandon beach, New Plymouth, which is being made by employees of the New Plymouth Borough Council. “This beach is under the control of this committee and has been so for many years. We have effected a few Improvements on the other side of the river and hope to do still more with the assistance of the borough. “There seems to be the impression that the Strandon beach is a ‘No Man’s Land,’ but that is not so,” Mr. Coleman added. “Many believe the beach is patrolled by the Old Boys’ surf team, but it is not. The East End club provides a patrol for the East End and Strandon beaches. This committee controls the reserve property from. Eliot Street to Nobs Line.” Mr. Coleman’s remarks arose from the fact that workmen are tar-sealing McLean Street at its junction with Nobs Line. Eventually the whole street will be completed. The rough, unformed lower* portion of Nobs Line adjoining the beach has been cleared by borough workmen, and it is intended to lay down this area in lawns. A rockery will also be built, for which unemployed labour will be utilised. Strandon beach has become increasingly popular among swimmers at New Plymouth since the foreshore at East End began to be denuded of sand and bathers were forced towards Fitzroy. The fact that an organised patrol was established overcame public alarm concerning the dangerous area between the Strandon and Fitzroy beach and encouraged the beach’s popularity. The work at Nobs Line is being done in continuation of the New Plymouth Borough Council’s scheme for beautifying the town. Many unsightly corners and waste places of ground have been cleared and planted under the supervision of the beautifying committee, a sub-committee of the council. The only beautifying work at present, other than that in train at Nobs Line, is at the corner of Whiteley Street and Breakwater Road. Beautifying worlds have just been completed in Selwyn Street (Vogeltown) and Govett Avenue (Frankleigh Park).
