BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL

* PRESENTATION TO MR. HORNER.

The annual concert of the Hawera Baptist Sunday school was held on Tuesday night, the children first being entertained at tea. A feature of the concert was a presentation to Mr. F, W. Horner, who has taught in the school for the last 12 years, by Mr. F. R. Brett, superintendent. Of the concerted items on the programme the most popular was a scarf drill and ‘ Ten Little Nigger Boys,” the participants in which were trained by Miss Ings and . Mrs. A. K. North respectively. The primary department was also responsible for various items under Miss Gulliver. A children’s choir of some 60 voices, under the baton of Mr. Horner, gave several items. The following _ were individual performers: Recitations, Joyce Bachelor, Betty Bardsley, Aloe Park, Phyllis Trim, Kenneth North, Alison Trim, Fred Brett, Vera Gabbie, Florence Sharp and Lola Davies; tenor horn solo, Jack Ewington; songs, Anne Gabbie, Miss P. Brett; monologue, Miss J. Moore. At the conclusion of the concert the annual reports were presented by the superintendent, Mr. F, Brett, and the secretary, Miss D. Britland. The annual prize-giving ceremony also took place. Mrs. F. Brett presented the various prizes to the scholars. In Mr. Homer the Sunday school staff had one -who was the only member of the original teaching staff still in service and who, for the past 12 years, had laboured in love as the training genius and conductor for their anniversary, said Mr. Brett in making the presentation to Mr. Horner of a beautifully bound and suitably inscribed volume. Mr. Horner said the gift had come to him as a complete surprise and that, while Mr. Brett had been speaking, he had been carrying in his mind the names of several others as the possible recipients. He rather thought that it was Mr. Brett himself who should have been receiving, rather than presenting the token. He appreciated the thought and the gift and hoped that he would have many more years of service to come. The service, said Mr. Horner, was its own reward.

The Rev. J. Ings voicec. his appreciation of the service of Mr. Brett as superintendent and his band of Reachers.
