CINEMA PROGRAMMES
NEW PLYMOUTH OPERA HOUSE.
“MURDER AT THE VANITIES.”
Paramount’s “Murder at the Vanities,” which opened a three-day season at the New Plymouth Opera House yesterday, is something entirely new in the way of musical productions, combining with spectacle sequences not the more conventional back-stage story, but a well-plan-ned and vividly acted crime drama. The story is one of intrigue in the life of a Continental tenor playing in a Broadway show which culminates in the murder of a woman detective and a beautiful young actress during the progress of the first night. The entire action of the picture is during the two hours of the production. The mystery of the murders is solved within a minute of the fall of the curtain. Carl Brisson, the possessor of one of the screen’s outstanding tenor voices, plays the romantic lead with Kitty Carlisle opposite him. Humour and heavy work are well handled by Victor McLaglen and Jack Oakie. The spectacle sequences are excellently and unusually treated. A strong supporting programme of shorts is featured.
