SHORTAGE OF LABOUR
PUBLIC WORKS IN OTAGO.
EFFECT OF SEASONAL DEMANDS.
Dunedin, Nov. 26.
Various public works undertakings which are at present in progress •in Otago are being held up to a certain extent on account of a shortage of labour. Strange as this may seem at a time, when unemployment is prevalent, it is true. While there are usually quite enough or more than enough men available for the Public Works Department’s purposes, it is at present working without 150 men it really needs.
“The trouble is,” Mr. T. M. Ball,.district engineer, explained to-day, “that most of the available men are now being absorbed in seasonal occupations, such as shearing and freezing works labour, and as those industries pay higher wages than we do we are short of men. We need 50 men. for work on the KingstonQueenstown road, 50 for the Te AnauMilford road, and 65 for deviation work on the Lindis Pass road. These jobs are available only to married men who will be employed full time on the co-opera-tive contract system and paid at the rate of 10s 6d per day.
