“N.Z. RAILWAYS MAGAZINE.”
New Zealanders who have warmly appreciated the bright national features of the Railways Magazine will be specially pleased with the 64-page Christmas issue which has many bright features, well illustrated. Mr. James Cowan’s “Famous New Zealanders” this month is Bishop Pompallier, a pioneer missionary who helped to make some interesting history before and after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Another special feature by Mr. Cowan is “What the Royal Duke Will See”—a review of the scenic and historic high-lights of the Prince's itinerary in New Zealand. In merry mood Mr. Ken Alexander serves up “This Christmas Caper,” humorously illustrated by himself. Miss Elsie K. Morton describes the “New Fiordland Round Trip,” which is believed to be a rival of the Te Anau-Milford “World’s Wonder Walk.” Mr. Quentin Pope and “Playboy” (one of New Zealand’s leading writers on sport) give excellent articles on sport. Miss Elsa Flavell, Hawera. offers “The Christmas Present,” a cheerful story, which was awarded first prize in the New Zealand Women Writers and Artists’ Association's competition. Other good reading includes “Pictures of New Zealand Life,” "Wisdom of the Maori,” original verse, a chat on books and writers and special notes and comments on fenfinine topics.
