FOOTPATH CYCLING
CONDITION OF WAITARA ROADS.
CHARGE LAID BY INSPECTOR.
The footpaths were much better thah the roads in some of the back streets of Waitara, said the borough inspector, Mr. L. T. Kendrick, during the hearing of a charge of cycling on the pathway against Alexander Anderson, heard by Mr. W. H. Woodward in the Waitara Court yesterday. Anderson, who wrote admitting the breach, was fined ss, with 10s coSts.
In his letter answering the summons, which was for an offence committed in Mouatt Street on October 9, Anderson said that Mouatt Street had been almost impossible, although some of the biggest boulders had now been cleared away. It was the first time in the 30 years he had been riding a cycle that he had had occasion to use the footpath. Other footpath cyclists had been stopped, he alleged, but had since heard nothing of the matter. He submitted he should have been warned only. The footpath in Mouatt Street was better than the road, said Mr. Kendrick, who laid the information. His trouble was that the borough of Waitara was far too big for him to watch all the streets where that was the case. He Certainly had not distinguished between offenders.
Mr. Woodward: I do not suggest you have been making fish of one and flesh of another, but you realise it would be wrong to do so? —I do not do that. I realise that an inspector must do his duty and that he cannot please (everybody.
