COUNTRY CRICKET
MATIERE PLAYERS’ SUCCESS. GOOD PRACTICES ARRANGED. : On Saturday a large number of Matiere cricket players journeyed to Ongarue and five members played for the Ongarue Club in the competition match with •Taumarunui. Taumarunui batted first and was dismissed for 62 runs, G. Rutherford, with four wickets for 28, bowl? ing well. Ongarue replied with 100, securing' a two-point win. G. Rutherford, 36 not out, and J. Hearfield, 22, were largely responsible for the total, while the other Matiere members of tho team all scored a few runs. The position in this competition is: Matapuna 6, Ongarue 5, Railways 5, Taringamotu 4, Taumarunui 3, Veneer 1. • No match was played at Matiere on Sunday last, as a number of the members of the team were busy shearing or otherwise unavailable. However, a
good practice was held. At present the Matiere domain is in the best order it has ever been seen in, thanks to several energetic members of the club who followed up the cutting of the hay by going over the ground with lawnmowers and thus giving a first-class surface for play. A good practice was held on Sunday. Next Sunday the team will visit Ohura for the second round of the competition matches. At present the position of the teams is Matiere 6, Ohura 4, Tokirima 0, Turoto 0.
