TWO VISITORS OUT

NEW SOUTH WALES TENNIS TITLES.

DEFEAT OF HUGHES AND MAIER.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.50 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 27. Two overseas players were eliminated from the singles championship when the New South Wales tennis contest was resumed in overcast weather and oh damp courts to-day.

Early in the match with Hughes Thompson followed his deep drives into the net, where he volleyed and smashed brilliantly. He led 5—3 in the third set and had match point, but when going for a smash he fell. Hughes employed a heavier cut in the next two sets, in which Thompson deteriorated, but he played superbly in the final set to win. Hughes was the victim of a number of very bad umpiring decisions. Maier was out .of touch, while the Queenslander Moon was in fine driving touch.

Miss Macfarlane (New Zealand) was unable to cope with Mrs. Molesworth’s heavy cut shots, but in the combined doubles with Moore she indulged in some great rallies against the world’s champions Perry and Miss Round, who were forced to call on their best to win.
