One of the leading men in the business and commercial life of Auckland for many years, Mr. Harold Willey Hudson, died yesterday, states a Press Association message. Mr. Hudson was managing director of L. D. Nathan and Co., Ltd. He had been in indifferent health for some time. His age was 75.

Major A. E. Conway, N.Z.S.C., senior officer of the regimental district, afid Captain F. L. Hunt, N.Z.S.C., adjutant to the Taranaki Regiment, will leave New Plymouth to-morrow to attend a staff course at Trentham for officers of the central military command. The course will conclude on December 13.

The death has occurred at Gisborne of Mr. W. R. Rutledge, aged 85, a sheep farmer, states a Press Association message. Mr. Rutledge’s family were amongst the earliest settlers of western Victoria and his father was a member of the first Parliament of that State. Mr. Rutledge was born only 15 years after the first white settlement was established in Victoria and resided there till middle age, coming to New Zealand 30 years ago.

The Very Rev. Father Daniel Hurley, S.M., has been appointed Provincial of the Marist Fathers in New Zealand and Australia, reports a Wellington Press Association message. The term of the present Provincial, Dr. Kennedy, has expired. Father Hurley will take up his duties on January 1 with headquarters at Wellington. He is at present at Sydney, where he has been rector of St. Patrick’s Church for the last seven years.

Members of the executive of the Taranaki Boxing Association last night presented Mr. J. M. Smith with a tobacco pouch suitably engraved as a mark of his association with the executive during the past two years.. In making the presentation the president, Mr. J. Garcia, said that while regretting his loss, which would be severely felt as he was a keen worker in the interests of the association, members were pleased at his promotion. Messrs. J. Horlor, W. Roebuck, L. Wallace, D. Le Cren Morgan, E. Jackson, L. E. Sowry and F. Gable also spoke in. eulogistic terms.
