“White pine, or kahikatea, is the most valuable timber we are handling now,” said Mr. C. R. Lovatt, principal of the large Whangarei milling firm. “Despised a few years ago, it now gives a better return, log for log, than rimu, so far as North Auckland is concerned.” The average price ranges about £1 for 100 ft. Mr. Lovatt said that his firm last month created a record output of 28,000 butter boxes, which w r ent to district factories between Waipu and Kaikohe. In the manufacture of these boxes 112,000 superficial feet of kahikatea was used.
