WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Norfolk: The Norfolk Institute met on Saturday last, when a good attendance of members was presided over by Mrs. W- Brown. The demonstration was the altering of paper- patterns, the demonstrator being Mrs. F. Cbrney. Competition for a decorated vase of flowers was won by Mi's. W. Brown, with Miss Corney second and Mrs. Startup third. The hostesses for the. afternoon were Mrs. George and Miss F. Corney.
Te Roti:—The monthly meeting of the To Roti Women’s Institute was held on Friday, Mrs. Bloor presiding over a good attendance. The pointe competition was for the best darned sock, to be darned in five minutes. It was won by Mrs. Grurson 1, Mrs. Stokes 2, Mrs. Smith 3. An interesting demonstration of making floor rugs from old woollen articles was given by Mrs. Smith, a beautiful finished rug being displayed. The roll call, “My pet superstition,’’ drew some very interesting replies. Arrangements were completed for a garden party to be held at Mrs. Bloor's home in December, when various competitions and a tennis tournament will provide amusement. A motor-car competition was won by Mrs. Howell. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Smith and Henry. Opunake Maori:—The monthly meeting was held on Monday, Mrs. White presided over an attendance of about 18. Mrs. R. Ritchie demonstrated the making of “humpties,” which was much appreciated by the members. She also judged the biscuits competition, which was won by Miss E. Roach, with Miss B. Hbro second. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Bishop, Hohaia and Rikihana.
Inglewood;—The monthly meeting of the Inglewood Institute was held last Wednesday. Mrs. Adnams presided over an attendance of 50. A welcome was extended to four new members, Mesdames Patton, Basham, Reed and Greiner. Mrs. Sinclair was appointed relieving secretary in place of Mrs. Porter, who has been ill. Mesdames Leech, Franks, and Adnams represented the institute at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the making of toys for the children’s Christmas tree. Miss Corney read a report on the federation council meeting at Hawera. Programmes for the next six months were distributed. A flower competition was held. Results were: Miniature vase of flowers, Mrs. Lindsay; miniature bowl, Mrs. Cutfield; jam jar, Mrs. Codd; woman’s shoulder spray, Mrs. Henry; man’s buttonhole, Mrs. Henry; floating bowl, Mrs. Cod'd; Victorian posy, Mrs. Henry; novel device, Mrs. Adnams. The pointe prize, given by Mrs. Adnams, was won by Mrs. Codd and the second prize, given by Mrs .McAllister, was won by Mrs. Cutfield. Mrs. McAllister acted as judge, and Mrs. Dansie as steward. A competition for articles made by members of the junior branch was supervised by Mrs. Lindsay and Miss Kennedy was awarded first place. Mrs. Sutherland was the judge. A large and varied assortment of basketware from the Blind Institute was displayed, and Mrs. Lander, who was in charge, sold numerous articles. Songs were given by Mrs. Faris and Mrs. McKeen and elocutionary items by Mrs. Braybrooke. As Mrs. Egarr was unable to be present to give a talk on gardening, members were invited to exchange gardening hints. The hostesses were Mesdames Smith, Cutfield, Sutherland and Sutton, and Misses Trimble and E. Trimble.
