FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE AWARD.

A meeting of the committee of the New Plymouth Red Cross Society was held last night. Archdeacon G. H. Gavin presided. The society had a bank balance of £l5 12s 2d, the chairman reported. The Florence Nightingale scholarship was instituted to send a New Zealand purse to England to undergo a postgraduate Course at Belford College for one year, Mrs. W. F. Southam explained to the meeting. The nurse would also gain experience in Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital, and Hungarian and German Red Cross hospitals. Tire course covered every branch of public health and the administrative side as well.

It was proposed to award a scholarship in 1935, she continued. The scholarship would cost £4OO, £2OO to be met by the Registered Nurses’ Association and £2OO by the Red Cross Society. The money was desired by the end of February. A parcel of toys had been received from the Ahititi branch of the Women’s Division Of the Farmers’ Union for distribution at Christmas time. The committee expressed its appreciation of the action of the Ahititi women. Thanks w&re accorded the Jumor Red Cross Society for forwarding a parcel of books to the hospital. Thosfe present at the meeting were: — Archdeacon G. H. Gavin (chairman), Mesdames C. P. Chapman, E. Smith, W. F. Southam, L. W. Veale, H. N. Seldon, Misses E. Wilson, Mynott, Miss Jemison (secretary), Sister Small and the Rev. J. D. McLennan Wilson.
