MR. SMITH’S WORK

NEW MINISTER OF EDUCATION. APPRECIATION OF PAST SERVICE. Appreciation of the work of the Hon. S. G. Smith was expressed by members of the New Plymouth High Schools’ Board at a meeting last night when a short interruption was caused by the arrival of a telegram from the Minister. “I greatly appreciate your kind message of congratulation in connection with my appointment as Minister of Education,” ran the message. “I trust that future relations between your board and myself will be of a friendly and cordial nature. I regret very much that the change will necessitate my retirement as a member of your board and I desire to thank you and your fellow members for their kindly consideration and courtesies to me during my years of membership.” For many years Mr. Smith had been one of the most useful members of the board, said Mr. H. R. Billing. In congratulating Mr. Smith on his appointment he moved that the board place on record its appreciation of the vast amount of work he had done on the board and of the time he had devoted to education in the district. The new Minister had done invaluable work for education in Taranaki and in New Zealand, said Mr. P. J. H. White. In connection with the machinery of the department, Mr. Smith had brought pressure to bear and had been mainly instrumental in having certain things altered. In his opinion a better appointment could not have been made.
