BOROUGH ELECTIONS

NEW ROLL BEING COMPILED. CANVASS OF NEW PLYMOUTH. The next election for Mayox- and councillors, representatives of the New Plymouth borough on the Taranaki Hospital Board and New Plymouth Harbour Board, will be held on the first Wednesday in May next. The borough roll fox* these elections is now being compiled, and will close on January 31. Four men by the council are engaged at present making a house-to-house visit with a view to ensuring tlxat all persons possessing the necessary qualifications are enrolled. These men have with them copies of the roll and a full supply of forms of claims for enrolment. The men employed by the council in obtaining enrolment claims are strictly prohibited from canvassing fox* any proposed candidate or for any party. They sire also prohibited whilst on duty from discussing politics, municipal or otherwise. Residents are requested to cooperate by refraining from introducing such subjects and to confine any conversation entirely to the question, of the enrolment claims and qualifications foi" enrolment.

Although electors’ names may appear on the rolls for the parliamentary elections, it does not follow that they will be on the municipal rolls. The two rolls are separate and distinct, the parliamentary roll being compiled by the Government and the municipal rolls by the borough council. In addition to those possessing a* freehold, rating ox- occupiers’ qualifications, all British subjects (either by birth or naturalisation in New Zealand), male ox* female, 21 years of age and over who have resided in New Zealand for one jtear, and in the borough of New Plymouth for three months immediately prioi" to enrolment, are eligible for enrolment .under the residential qualification. Husbands or wives of ratepayers or freeholders should be particular to claim under their ratepayers’ ox- freeholders’ qualification and not under the residential qualification. In the case of husband and wife, any qualification possessed by either of them shall be deemed to be possessed by each of them.
