CENTENARY PROFESSIONAL GOLF.

Leo Diegel (U.S.A.) defeated Densmore Shute (US.A.) 2up and lin the final of the centenary professional golf championship, giving a spectacular finish to the centenary open meeting. Diegel’s victory followed one of the most remarkable recoveries seen in major golf. He was five down at lunch, but he demoralised Shute by going out in 33 in the afternoon, turning the huge deficit into a lead of one up. At the 31st Diegel was four up. Although Shute fought valiantly to win two of the next three holes, Diegel ended the match in his favour at the 35th. Diegel at one stage in the afternoon round won seven holes in succession. He was five strokes under fours for the 17 holes. Diegel’s win carried a £5OO prize. Shute for second place won £2OO. Of the £3OOO that was offered in prizes for the meeting Americans scooped £2770, the principal winners being Jimmy Thompson (£1025), Diegel (£900), Shute (£210) and Gene Sarazen (£150). ,E. Naismith (Victoria), who took £l5O, was the only substantial Australian winner.
