Sir Edmund Vestey at a luncheon after the launching of the Blue Star New Zealand Star said that the building of ships like the New Zealand Star was frought vfith anxiety, Owing to . the restrictions of Britain : s food imports. It would be more advisable, he said, to help the British farmer from the Exchequer than by means of tariffs, which increased the cost of living of the poorest and restricted consumption when the world needed it vastly increased in order to reduce unemployment.
