GAMES IN THE SOUTH

POWER BOARD WINS

STRATFORD TAIL COLLAPSES

GEARY AND BUIST SCORE WELL

Power Board scored its first win since entering the South Taranaki senior A competition on Saturday by defeating Stratford at Hawera. The visiting team was dismissed for 81, and Power Board, after having five men dismissed for- 26, went on to total 95 for six wickets before stumps were drawn. After trying Buist and 'D. Hughes fruitlessly against Hall and Gatton for a few overs Power Board changed the bowlers to Lendrum and Geary, each taking a wicket. Against Barlow and Walker they began to become expensive, and the score reached 60, including a six to Barlow off Geary, before Buist and Hughes were brought back. The third wicket fell at 65, Barlow returning One to Buist with his score at 30. With the exception of Beere, no other Stratford bat stood up to the bowlers, and the side was all out for 81. O’Dea took three catches behind the stumps. Buist, in 14 • overs, including seven maidens, bowled well to take four for 26, and D. Hughes took four for 17 off 12 overs, five of which were maidens. Two expensive run-outs of two of the sounder batsmen of the side and the clean-bowling of three others, made Power Board’s task not an easy one. When Buist and Geary got together, however, the score rapidly improved, and the partnership added 38. O’Dea helped Geary to secure the required number. Buist hit four fours in a bright innings, and Geary, though securing only two boundaries, played stylish and correct cricket. Walker put up a fine bowling performance, sending down 16 overs, three maidens, for three wickets. Rapid bowling changes failed to shift Geary and Buist, and the averages suffered. Details are:—

S. BETTS MAKES CENTURY KAPONGA DEFEATS HAWERA. DORMER’S DOUBLE PERFORMANCE Although, after scoring the good total of 170, Hawera had three Kaponga wickets down for 23, it was easily defeated, Kaponga going on to score 292.’ The fourth wicket fell for 182, and thereafter the Kaponga batsmen mercilessly flogged the tired bowling, S. Betts scoring his first century of the season in fast time. Hawera batted first and a hurricane innings by Little, during which he hit 15 fours and one six, materially added to the total. Fraser and Des Forges also batted well, but the wily Donner, with good-length breaking balls, was too good for the rest. Two Hawera wickets fell for 1, Little and Des Forges putting on 111 for the third wicket When Court and S. Betts got together in the Kaponga innings the Hawera bowling was collared. Court hit nine fours and Botts five sixes and 13 fours, while Dormer hit eight fours and a six. No fewer than six sixes were hit. Bray, putting himself on at the tail end of the innings, was the only bowler to secure a respectable average. Details are:— HAWERA. Des Forges, 1.b.w., b Dormer 19 Shaw, b S. Betts 0 Kara, b R. BARKERS’ GOOD STAND OLD BOYS DEFEATS PATEA STURROCK BOWLS ACCURATELY A fine stand by the Barker brothers, realising 41, enabled Old Boys to beat Patea by 123 to 99 in a one-innings game at Hawera. W. Barker went on to score 51, but the remainder of the Old Boys batsmen, with the exception of Herbert, failed to shine.

Patea batted first, and Palmer, Jones, Edwards and P. Wills were the best. The bowling, especially Sturrock’s, was excellent and always difficult to score off. Sturrock sent down 13 overs, including three maidens.

The good stand by the Barkers was largely responsible for the win by Old

Boys. At one stage, when Herbert was in, the side scratched for the necessary runs, but as soon as the total was passed the batsmen hit out lustily and threw their wickets away. McKenna, in five overs, and Rowlands, in two, secured the best averages. Details are:— PATEA. Palmer, 1.b.w., b Sturrock 12 W. MANAIA HAS CLOSE CALL SENIOR B GAMES IN SOUTH. The feature of play in the South Taranaki senior B competition was another win snatched from defeat by Manaia, the leader of the competition. Old Collegians was leading by 40 runs with only two Manaia wickets to fall, but those two added another 45 runs. Old Boys B beat Stratford and Stratford High School had an easy win over Hawera. C. WHALEN’S EXCELLENT SCORE. The match at Manaia was one of changing fortune. Old Collegians batted first and again Christie, C. Whalen and Kitt lost five wickets for 20. Gorrtian was still in, however, and with Malone made a stand, Bayly as eighth man adding a further useful score for the innings to close at 85 (Malone 25, Gorman 21, Bayly 19). Christie took seven for 32. Malone and Hughes completely gained the upper hand against Manaia’s early batsmen and had eight wickets down for 45. The veteran H. Whalen then joined C. Whalen, who had struck form after nearly succumbing in the first two overs and the pair took the score from 45 to 71. C. Whalen kept the bowling and with three required for a win hooked one well over the leg boundary for a triumphant six. The innings ended next over at 90 with C. Whalen not out 49. H. Whalen made 11. H. Hughes took five for 38. OLD BOYS B BEATS STRATFORD. With both teams showing a decided tail, Old Boys B beat Stratford by 36 runs in the first innings at Hawera yesterday. Old Boys made 98, Hammond 24, Stevens 21, Kelpe 19, Dowdle 11. Ward took five for 11. Stratford lost four for 51 and then was all out for 62, Thetkleson 21, Beal 17, Walker 12. Dowdle took five foils and Stevens five for 44. In a second innings Old Boys had 85 for 6 at stumps,. Walker retired 27, Hammond 17,-Stevens 12, Ogden not out 12. STRATFORD SCHOOL MAKES 231. Compiling the best total it has recorded this season, Stratford High School decisively defeated Hawera at Stratford by a margin of 122 runs in a single innings game. Hawera was first to bat and made 109, Lobbum 26, Longstaff 23, Fairweather 22 and Kibblewhite 12. Foley took five for 60 and F. Bamford four for 21. Hawera played one man short. Despite the fact that Stevens, bowling for Hawera, took eight School wickets for 59, five School batsmen entered double figures, F. Betts 83, Anderson 63, F. Bamford 19, R. Bamford 15 and Kelly 13. Considering that the School team has many young players in its ranks the result was particularly creditable even though allowance has to be made for Hawera being a man short. OPUNAKE EASILY BEATS SCHOOL. With no less than four batsmen making “ducks,” the Hawera High School batsmen collapsed against. Opunake at Opunake after the home side had made 122, the School total being only 45. Opunake batted first, and three wickets were down for 11, but Dobbin and Wells stopped the rot to good effect. Dobbin made 40, Watt 31 and Wells 25. Lester took four for 26 and Anderson three for 20. Apart from Whitehead, run out after scoring 15, and Lester 7, School’s batsmen could do nothing against the bowling, though the poor pitch had something to do with the collapse. Watt and Cundy each took two for four, and Clegg and Woolford secured two wickets each cheaply. FACTORY CRICKET MATCH MARRIED MEN VERSUS SINGLE. A match was played at Manaia between married and single employees of the Riverdale and Kaupokonui dairy factories on Friday evening. The game proved interesting, single men winning by the small margin of five runs. Single men batted first and scored 80 runs. I. Hansen 18, F. Andrews 16 and Gilbanks 14 scored the bulk of the total. C. Whalen and E. Sutton secured seven and three wickets respectively. Married men scored 75. E. Sutton 38 played a fine Innings, securing half of the total. Sanson, 13 also scored well. Gilbanks secured seven wickets and Hickey took the rest. Details are:— Single men: Andrews b Sutton 16, Lavery c McKain b Whalen 0, R.
