The New South Wales tennis championships were commenced to-day in brilliant weather and before a large crowd. Maier - (Spain) and Kirby (South Africa) both found the fast courts troublesome early in the day, but when they became accustomed to the surface they gave brilliant exhibitions. Both Perry’s and Hughes’ opponents offered little resistance, but in the doubles the Victorians, Tonkin and Holloway, played amazingly well and the English pair were at their best to win. HAWERA’S CLOSE WIN. TWO-SET MARGIN AGAINST MANATA Hawera had a close margin against Marini a at Manaia, in the South. Taranaki inter-club competition, winning by 13 sets to 11 and 181 games to 164. The Hawera side was not at full strength, but Manaia’s representatives played particularly well and the issue was in doubt throughout.
