NO SNOW FOR SKI-ING

CLUB SPORTS ABANDONED. MT. EGMONT CLUB’S TITLES. The ski championships of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club will be awarded to club members on performances in the Taranaki championship. This decision was made yesterday, when,, although many members made the trip, it was found impossible to find good courses for the events on Rangitoto Flat. Warm rain in the early part of the week had washed away most of the snow. Ski-ing was not abandoned altogether and, of the dozen or more who made the trip to the summit, Messrs. B. Murphy and H. Snowdon skied from the crater to Fantham’s Peak. What there was of the snow was in perfect order. PATEA SURFERS AT BEACH. SEASON’S OPENING FIXTURES. A westerly wind marred to some extent the opening of the Patea Surf and Life-Saving Club’s season yesterday, but there was a full muster of members and a good attendance of the public. Mr Alan Maxwell, the club’s president, complimented the teams on the muster and the appreciative interest shown by the public. Women members provided afternoon tea in the pavilion. The first beach patrol was commenced yesterday, Messrs. T. Burgess and E. Oakley being patrolmen. The alarm event team comprised L. Edv/ards, R. A. Adams. E. Oakley, N. Taylor, L. Fisher, T. Bur - gess. A competition between the captains and vice-captain’s teams was won by the vice-captain’s team in a crossriver relay. The personnel of the teams being: Vice-captain’s, Oakley, Milliken, Willis, Richardson Clince (time 8m 2 l-ss); captain’s, Adams, Burgess, Edwards, Taylor, Fisher. SUBSCRIPTION LIST OPENED. APPEAL FOR HAWERA BAND. Mr. L. O. Hooker has opened a subscription list for the Hawera Municipal Band. Some months ago he was approached by the band committee to undertake some method of financial relief. The controversy with the borough council, and its decision not to grant any more than the present subsidy of £l3O has led to his opening an appeal. Mr. Hooker said no provision was being made for the band’s immediate financial needs. The borough council's subsidy had been paid up till December 31, and there was no money to meet commitments, including the conductor’s salary. The existing atmosphere had not been helpful and it was necessary for some action to be taken, said Mr. Hooker.

“My difficulty lies in the fact that I do not want to interfere with the usual avenue of annual subscriptions to meet accumulated debts,” he added. “Therefore I am making this direct appeal for contributions to meet the liabilities of the band, which will amount to about £l2O by December 31. Already very practical sympathy has been shown by the Hawera Retailers’ Association, which has given £lO, and Mr. H. N. Lester, who has given £6 15s lOd.”
