SHUTE AND DIEGEL
CENTENARY GOLF FINALISTS. PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph-'Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 23. The semi-finals in the centenary professional golf tournament resulted: — Densmore Shute (U.S.A.) defeated Craig Wood (U.S.A.) one up. Leo Diegel (U.S.A.) defeated Joe Ezar (U.S.A.) 6 up and 5. Shute played well for the morning round. He was 68 going to lunch, being three up on Wood. At the 15th Shute needed three fours to better his yesterday’s 66, but three putts at the 18th. ended that hope. In the afternoon Wood played better and lowered the deficit, but too many halves prevented him from ever gaining the lead, notwithstanding a mighty drive of 320 yards at the 13th.
Neither Diegel nor Ezar played well in the morning, both giving opportunities which were not accepted. Their form was lamentable for such players. Diegel finished the round two up. In the afternoon Ezar lipped three putts but made amends at the next hole, dropping a sensational 30-feet putt.
