Cardinal Gasparri, an Italian Holy See diplomatist, entered the priesthood in 1877 and after being a professor of canonic law in Paris was delegate to Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. After undertaking ecclesiastic and. diplomatic missions he became a cardinal in 1907. He was Secretary of State to Benedict XV. and Pius XI. and negotiated and signed the Lateran Treaty in 1929.
