MOTOR DEALER’S BREACH
UNREGISTERED LORRY USED. Pleading not to a charge of permitting an unregistered motor vehicle to be used to cart soil, Henrick Hansen Moller was convicted and ordered to pay costs amounting to 10s by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., at the New Plymouth Police Court yesterday. The magistrate said he believed Moller’s explanation, but an offence had been committed. Sergeant S. G. Clist said Moller was a garage proprietor and had allowed . a lorry bearing dealer’s plates to be used for removing soil. The Act provided that dealer’s plates were only for the demonstrating of a vehicle, and. the carrying of anything was not within the Act Moller would probably say that the driver of the lorry was trying it out with a view to purchase. Moller said that was the position. The driver of the lorry was contemplating buying and was testing the vehicle by carting soil from Moller’s business premises to Moller’s home. He thought he was within the law and had no intention of committing a breach. He had three sets of dealer’s plates. He registered the vehicle the following day. There must be some limit to the use of dealer’s plates, said the magistrate. They were, for demonstration purposes only and could not be used for work.
