SWIMMING CONTROL

POOL IN THE HUATOKI DOMAIN. VOGELTOWN SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A suggestion by the - Huatoki Domain Board that, control of swimming in the Vogeltown school swimming pool should be’ vested in a special committee comprising representatives of the school committee, the board and responsible members of the public was discussed at the meeting of the Vogeltown school committee last night. Owing, however, to the committee being undecided as to whether or not it could vest the control of part of its property in an outside organisation, no action was taken; but a letter will be sent to the Taranaki Education Board asking a definition of the committee’s position. The headmaster, Mr. A. H. McLean, reported that the average roll at the school had been 172.4 this month and the average attendance 163.6, or 94.3 per cent. The percentage should have been higher, but the attendance was adversely affected by the continuation of the epidemic of influenza among school children. It seemed apparent that the school had dropped a sub-grade to grade 4a. This involved the transfer of ripe grade 2 assistant, and notice of transfer had been received by Miss McLeod. An official inspection of the school was made on October 20, and the inspector’s report stated that the school was conducted in a highly satisfactory way. The pupils showed that the teaching methods were efficient and the discipline good. The classrooms were kept in extremely good order and were scrupulously clean. The grounds and interior appointments of the school gave evidence of the committee’s keen interest in the school. It was also reported that a social evening was held on October 20, at which trophies won in the calf-rearing competitions were presented by Mr. A. E. Washer and trophies won by the school teams in the Soccer competition by Mr. W. Thomson. Permission was granted the Vogeltown Tennis Club to use the school court during specified hours. Mr. M. Bellringer, representative of the’ Home and School Association, waited on the committee and discussed the organisation of a celebration at the end of the term. It was decided to hold a celebration on December 8, but that the official ceremony would be held on the closing day. There were present at the meeting Messrs. J. M. Thomson (chairman), S. Smith, S. Miller, S. Harris and F. E. Gadd.
