HARD TENNIS COURTS
WORK COMMENCED AT HAWERA. KING EDWARD PARK GROUNDS. Work was begun yesterday on the laying down of three asphalt tennis courts at King Edward Park, Hawera. The contractors, Messrs. Hartnell and Son, New Plymouth, expect the courts to be finished in three or four weeks. Four inches of turf have been removed from the area and a three-inch base of metal will be laid down. One inch of asphalt will be spread over the top. There will be 13 tons of asphalt used in the formation, while 156 yards of crushed metal from the Hawera County Council pit will be needed in the foundations. It is estimated that the cost of the courts will be approximately £lOO per court. All the labour necessary for the work has been procured locally. A special paint will be used in the marking of the courts, and the lines will not need renewing for three or four seasons.
