FITZROY CONCERT
PHILHARMONIC EVENING HELD. SUCCESS OF SECOND APPEARANCE. An appreciative audience greeted the Philharmonic Society when it staged its second concert in the Methodist Sunday School last night. The appreciation of the audience was expressed in insistent demands for encores. Apart from the solo numbers the programme was the same as produced a fortnight ago at New Plymouth. Six choral numbers judiciously arranged formed the basis of- the concert. The opening number, “When Evening’s Twilight Gathers Round” (Hatton), was followed by “Moonlight and Music” (Pensuti), “My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land” (Elgar), a bracket number, “Where Art Thou, Beam of Light?” (Bishop), “Spring Song” (Pinsuti), “Simple Simon.” (Macey) and finally “The Village Blacksmith” (Weiss). Excellent ’cello solos were contributed by Mrs. A. W. Diprose, her selection being Nocturne No. 1” (Burgmuller) and as an encore “Air on <jr String” (Mattheson). “Adagio” (Burgmuller) closed on a skilfully subdued note while Gluck’s lovely “Minuet’.’ was well interpreted. Miss J. Grice, a gifted contralto, delighted the audience with four vocal numbers. After a sympathetic rendering of “Lullaby” (Mozart) and “Sweet and Low” (Wallace), she sang “Over the Mountains” (Roger-Quilter) and “Dedication” (Franc). Miss Grice also played the accompaniments.
, The lilting air of “The Floral Dance” (K. Moss) was captured by Mrs. S. O. Jones. Her next number was “A Loved Voice” (Balakiref). “Carmina” and “Ripe Strawberries” was Mrs. Jones’ second bracket of songs.
Mr. L. Kerr, replacing Mr. C.-Haar, sang “Under Arms,” “Invictus,” “The Wolf” and “King Charles,” while Miss F. King introduced a touch of variety into the programme with several recitations. She selected “The Story of Robinson Crusoe,” “Bobbie Burns,” “The Actress” and “The Coward.”
