CONFLICTING RULES
DIFFICULTY OF CRICKETERS. TWO IN OPERATION IN TARANAKI. Difference of opinion as to the interpretation of the rules concerning the regrading of players was expressed at a meeting of the northern division of the Taranaki Cricket Association last night, when it was shown that two conflicting rules were in operation. After a long discussion it was decided to deal with the matter next meeting, when the chairman, Mr. S. O. Jones, and other absent members would be present. Mr. J. Quirk said the New Plymouth Club Colts’ team had played a member for the last two Saturdays who had previously played senior grade cricket and had not been regraded. Mr. Quirk said no protest had been made, but he was of the opinion following a decision given by Mr. Jones that the player concerned could not play without being regraded. Rule 29 clearly stated that no player, having played in one grade, should be allowed to play in a lower grade unless with the consent of the management committee. Mr. A. Clarke held that rule 29 was amended so that a player had to seek regrading after having played two or more games in any one grade. Mr. Quirk: The amendment does not apply to rule 29, which is still in operation. Mr. Clarke said that practically every club had transgressed the rule if Mr. Quirk’s contention was correc He gave specific breaches by various clubs. It was shown that the amendment referred to rule 29a, which stated that no member of a team in any one grade might be transferred to any other team in the same grade, without the express consent of the management committee and the two clubs or teams concerned. Mr. Clarke: Then there are two rules in operation. Mr. P. S. Carroll: All the clubs are in the same box. “I am most definitely of the opinion that rule 29 has not been amended, and I think Mr. Jones was of tl-J same opinion when he ruled against the playing of some of our players when we submitted their cases for his opinion,” said Mr. Quirk. Mr. Clarke: Which rule, then, is in operation? “If you applied to me for a decision I would say the rule made at the later meeting, requiring the regrading of a player participating in two or more matches would apply,” said Mr. Carroll, who was acting-chairman.
