CROSSING OF TASMAN SEA. UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 12. Owing to unfavourable weather reports Squadron-Leader J. D. Hewett and Mr. C. E. Kay will not attempt the Tasman flight to-morrow, They may leave on Wednesday. The airmen will use the d© Havilland Rapjde entered in the London-Mel-bourne air race by the New Zealand Centenary Air Race Committee, and expect to cover the distance in about nine hours.
Speaking on the radio telephone on Saturday to Mr. L. W. Swan, secretary of the committee, Mr. Hewett said that the machine was being overhauled by the de Havilland representative at Sydney. The fliers expected to average about 145 miles an hour, and would carry sufficient fuel to give them an adequate margin of safety should head-winds or bad weather reduce the ground-speed. The machine is equipped with radio, and messages will be transmitted during the flight, on a wave-length of 660 metres.
