ARMISTICE DAY
SERVICE AT OPUNAKE. GATHERING AT MONUMENT. A short impressive service was held at the soldiers’ memorial at Opunake on Armistice Day. Pupils and teachers of the Sunday schools assembled around the monument, with ex-servicemen and members of the general public formed up behind. The service was conducted by the Rev. G. Wood (Presbyterian Church), who read part of Isaiah, chapter 40: “Comfort ye my people.” Appropriate prayers were offered and there was another Scriptural lesson. After the two minutes’ silence Mr. C. Humphries sounded the Reveille and Last Post. A Percussion Band. At the last meeting of tire Opunake school committee the headmaster (Mr. Armstrong) reported that it was the wish of the senior inspector (Mr. A. Bain) that a percussion band should be instituted in the primary school. Mr. Richards, a member of the committee, said the idea, which was an American, was a good one if properly carried out. It was a means of finding out latent musical talent in the first primers, he said. In his opinion the musical side of teaching for boys and girls at Opunake district was neglected. Visitors to Beach. Week-end visitors are beginning to arrive at the beach. The seaside committee has had energetic working committees preparing the grounds and making many improvements. Last week the first dance of the season was held in the pavilion, the dance room being crowded. Mrs. Malcolm played ' the music, and there were extras by Miss B. Fleming and Mr. O’Neill. Mr. K. Riley was master of ceremonies. Mr. A. H. Moore is confined to his bed.
