DRIVER RISKS LIFE

NEW BRAKES ON MOTOR SIR M. CAMPBELL’S PLANS SPEED ON DAYTONA BEACH 300 MILES AN HOUR HOPED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. London, Nov. 11. Sporting Life says Sir Malcolm Campbell plans to risk his life on January 19 or February 18 at Daytona in proving that racing car brakes are wrong. A new “Bluebird" is being built at Brooklands.

The new car employs wind brakes whereby travelling at 300 miles an hour Sir Malcolm will pull a lever, sliding out fins at the sides, wind pressure stopping the car. Ordinary brakes would melt if applied at a speed of over 200 miles an hour, which prevented Sir Malcolm achieving 300 miles an hour because Daytona beach was too short, necessitating earlier deceleration.

The car also employs twin rear wheels like a lorry, enclosed within the body, avoiding wheel spin and thus enabling it to reach its maximum speed earlier. The same engine will be retained.
