WIND MARS SPORTS
EGMONT SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. B. MURPHY WINS ONLY EVENT. Wind and mist, driving over the summit of Mount Egmont from the north, caused almost a complete postponement of the Mount Alpine Club’s ski sports on Fantham’s Peak yesterday. The only race run was a men’s straight race, the results of which count for the club and open championship. B. Murphy won the race and thus both events. A small party made an early ascent but found conditions bad. It was the cold wind that made the possibility of holding the races remote, though for most of the day Rangitoto Flat and the slopes round Syme Hut were clear of mist and many enjoyed themselves skiing. Several small parties made ascents of the main peak. At the summit the wind reached gale force. Besides Mount'Egmont club members there were Stratford and Taranaki club competitors and visitors. It is estimated that between 45 and 50 people reached Fantham’s Peak. Syme Hut was the base of operations and women members of the club provided tea. Results are:— Club straight race: B. Murphy, 675, 1; H. Snowdon, 95 2-ss, 2; A. Snowdon, 13915, 3; M. Shaw, 151 s, 4. Open straight race: B. Murphy, 675, 1; H. Snowdon, 95 2-ss, 2; J. Carryer, 965, 3; N. Carryer, 108 2-ss, 4.
