RECORD SIZE TROUT

MR. A. E. EICHSTAEDT’S SUCCESS. BIGGEST KNOWN FOR 20 YEARS. Although the fine weather recently experienced has favoured Taranaki anglers, nothing is yet known to have been landed to compare with Mr. A. E. Eichstaedt’s trout which he entered for the Stratford Acclimatisation Society’s competition at the beginning of the month. The monster weighed 111 b. loz., the next known best this season being apparently Mr. G. A. Carter's six-pound-er. Investigation proves that Mr. Eichstaedt’s trout is easily the biggest ever recorded in the Stratford society’s competition within the past 10 years. So much can definitely be shown by official records. It is also believed that it is the biggest trout landed in Taranaki over that period. So far as is known the only fish to beat it was caught by Mr. Fitzgerald, at one time proprietor of the Empire Hotel, Stratford, and now dead. This fish, which weighed over 121 b., was taken from a pool just below the present site of the bridge in Broadway about 20 years ago. It is generally believed that Mr. Fitzgerald fed the trout regularly over a period of foui- years and watched it grow steadily. Many people saw the fish, and it became the one desire of every angler in the district to land it. GENERAL ITEMS. Visitors to Mountain. Fine weather attracted a fair number of visitors to the Stratford mountain house yesterday. *A large bus carried passengers from Stratford, and about half a dozen cars arrived during the day. A party of ten people climbed to Fantham’s Peak, but there was too much wind for anyone to go to the summit.
