GIRL GUIDES’ RALLY
SOUTH TARANAKI GATHERING. PATEA TROOP WINS THE SHIELD. Nearly three hundred Guides and Brownies, representing Toko, Otakeho, Opunake, Manaia, Patea, Kaponga, Alton and Hawera, attended the Patea domain for the first South Taranaki rally on Saturday. Guides arriving by train reached Patea shortly before 12 o’clock and had lunch at the domain. The morning, which had been dull and overcast, gave place to an afternoon of brilliant sunshine. The divisional commissioner, Mrs. T. A. Watt, and the district commissioner, Mrs. J. Houston, were present, as well as the company and pack officers of the units. The afternoon programme included inspection and a march past, the Patea Municipal Band playing selections. Points were awarded, the South Taranaki Shield going to Patea, the troop’s smartness and performance earning it warm praise. The Hawera troop was runner-up, and Alton was third. After a very comprehensive and enjoyable sports programme had been contested the units marched to the Station.
