ALTAR AT ST. MARY’S
ADDITION OF THREE SHIELDS. READY FOR 90TH ANNIVERSARY. The altar at St. Mary’s 'Anglican Church, New Plyiriouth, is to be enriched before the 90th anniversary in September next year by the addition of three fumed oak shields. Mr. W. Andrews, Auckland, an old resident of New Plymouth, is doing the carving and has just been to Taranaki to make the necessary arrangements. One shield will bear the arms of the diocese of New Zealand halved with the personal arms of Bishop Selwyn, another the arms of the diocese of Canterbury to show the church’s origin from the Church of England and the third will bear the arms of the diocese of Lichfield. Owing to the pressure of other work, including three presentation caskets, one for the Duke of Gloucester and two for Lord Bledisloe, Mr. Andrews will not be able to have the work done much before September of next year. Mr. Andrews was a resident of New Plymouth for 35 years, and had a studio in Brougham Street. He moved in musical circles and was prominent in arranging concerts for all denominations. Upon leaving New Plymouth he . was at Wanganui for 14 years, being sent to England by the Wanganui Education Board during that period to renew his
craftsman’s studies at the Royal College of Art. After leaving Wangariui Mr. Andrews was 13 years at the Rutland Street School of Art, Auckland, and now has his own ecclesiastical carving business. In his early days at New Plymouth 40 years ago Mr. Andrews sang in St. Mary’s choir. He hopes to sing in the choir again at the 90th anniversary.
