FIRST ATTEMPT IN CANADA. EXPORT OF ROOF SHINGLES. Ottawa, Nov. 1. Canada has invoked its first compulsory business code as a direct of the “new deal” policy in the United States. The code relates to the marketing of lumber shingles for roofing.. This natural product of Canada, espe-

cially of British Columbia, finds its greatest, market in the United States. Previously, United States manufacturers had reduced their own output to 25 per cent, of capacity and requested Canadian manufacturers to do likewise. The Canadian Shingle Association found a voluntary code ineffective. It was broken so often that the United States authorities threatened entirely to prohibit imports from. Canada. The Canadian Government, accordingly, established the code, and. no. railway or steamship can transport shingles without a Government. licence. within the bounds of the code/
