HAWERA AND MANAIA

SCOUT AND CUB EVENT WINNERS. IMPROVING STANDARD OF WORK. The Tangahoe (Hawera) Bulldog Scout Patrol won the Ollerenshaw Cup for the second year in accession and the Manaia Grey Cub Pack the Legion' of Frontiersmen Totem Pole for the sixth year in succession at the South Taranaki scout and cub competitions at Hawera on Saturday. In gloriously fine weather the events were entered into by officials and nearly 20 scouts, who came from Stratford, Toko, Eltham, Manaia, Hawera and Patea, with keenness and enthusiasm; Competition was Keen in the scout division, four Hawera patrols finishing within 13 points of each other. The performance of the winning cub six, Manaia Grey, was most meritorious, the six securing highest points in five out of eight events, being second in one and third in another. The judges were pleased with the improved standard of work, which was under eight heads in each division, and included many useful fields of general knowledge. The. cub work was carried out in the morning, and in the afternoon prior to the scout events, the participants marched through High Street to King Edward Park headed by the Hawera Municipal Band. At the conclusion of the events, Commissioner F. W. Homer congratulated Scoutmaster F. Head and his patrol under their second success. As time went on the work was becoming keener and the standard was being raised. It was all the more meritorious that the patrols were not specially chosen, but were just ordinary working patrols. Mr. Horner then presented the cup to Scoutmaster Head. Cheers were given for the winning patrol, the runners-up, the officials and judges and the Hawera band.
