EARTHQUAKE PROOF

COUNCIL TO CONSIDER BY-LAWS. BUILDINGS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. According to advice received by the works committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council the Government is not yet prepared to bring down legislation to enforce the construction of earthquake resistant buildings by regulation. Consultation, however, is being made with the New Zealand Standards Institute regarding the compilation of model bylaws for the guidance of local authorities. Any council which wished, in the meantime, to pursue the matter actively, could adopt suitable measures in the meantime. The council last night resolved to instruct the engineer and the inspector, Mr. R. Day, to draft and submit by-laws based upon those in force at Wellington and report to the building regulations committee so that the matter could be expedited.
