PIGEON RACING
ROUGH FLIGHT FROM PICTON. BIRDS OUT UNTIL NEXT DAY. The Egmont Homing Club held its first South Island race from Picton on Saturday. It was the worst day experienced by the club this season. No birds homed until next day, when Mr. Rowe clocked a yearling cock early in the morning to beat another yearling by a good margin. The race was for the Pellew Shield. The results were: G. Rowe’s Pax, llhrs., 1; J. James’ Electro, llhrs. 13m., 2. Previous winners of the race were: 1925, R. T. Gardiner (4h. 43m.); 1926, J. Alldridge and R. Leighton (7h. 29m. 155.); 1927, J. Alldridge (sh. 23m. 195.); 1928, J. Bellringer (4h. 56m.); 1929, H. Kendall (6h. 15m. 305.); 1930, J. James (sh. 13m. 405.); 1931, B. Sole (7h.); 1932, M. Andrews (7h. Im. 455.); 1933, J. James (3h. 28m.). On Sunday an interval race for yearling hens was flown from Palmerston North. After a gruelling flight two birds were clocked in. The results were: G. Rowe’s White Wings, sh. 52m., 1; J. Wilson’s No. 43, sh. 52m. 255., 2.
