MOUNTAIN ROAD RACE

PROSPECTS FOR THE BIG EVENT.

INGLEWOOD CANDIDATES.

(By

“Toe Clip”)

This year marks the 16th anniversary of the mountain road race. Inglewood has always been represented in this event, and on several occasions has figured in the winning list. . Again sportsmen of Inglewood will be interested to see how. the local riders will compare with riders from other parts of New Zealand. . Inglewood riders have been over the course several times and all have registered good training times well below the. time limit of hours. All are very keen and appear to be very fit. The first Inglewood rider to finish will receive a handsome silver cup. F. Fussell, off 15m, has some very good performances this reason. In the South Island 75 mile race he was very unlucky. When holding 9th place only 20 miles off the winning post he suffered a blow-out. With a good run in the Taranaki race he seems to have a good chance of gaining a place. E. Standing, off 21m, has already gained honours in the race, for in 1932 he gained fifth, place, and he should again ride a good raee. , ,L. Reeve, off 30m, is only a first-year rider and shows great promise. Last week he .finished fifth in the Cambridge to Auckland race off the 17m mark, his time being 4h 7m 36s—a little over 7m slower that fastest time. On Ins present form and a 30m Handicap he should be in the running. N. Bennet, off 30m, is also a first-year rider and has. ridden some _ excellent club races this season. He is in the pink of racing condition and has taken his training seriously for the big race. L. Standing, off 35m, is making his fifth attempt at the race. On three occasions he has met with mishaps. This year he has shown his best form, and he is expected to ride an excellent race. When it comes to sorting out a winner a difficult problem is presented. Possibly the first twelve riders to’ finnish may. include riders such as F. Jennings (Petone), W. Sedan (Christchurch), A. Mackie (Christchurch), F. Fussell (Inglewood), J. Foote (New Plymouth), W. Ashman (New Plymouth), W. Lamberton (Christchurch), R. Weir (Christchurch), C. Burke (New Plymouth), C. Johnston (Auckland), P. Bicknell (Auckland), and N. Bennett (Inglewood). A battle royal is expected for the fastest time honours. The New Zealand championship appears likely to be fought out by the scratch, 10m and 15m markers. All are well known cyclists, including W. Lamberton (Chritchurch), W Weir (Christchurch) and C. Burke (New Plymouth).
