“When radium was first discovered,” said-Mr. J. E. Strachan in an address on Madame Curie at Christchurch, “it was sold at a price governed by the cost of production. Now it is exploited commercially on account of its rarity and costs ten times as much. It is a sad comment on our social organisation that a substance used solely for the benefit of the human race should be turned to individual profit in this way.”
