MANUTAHI TENNIS
ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CLUB. GENERAL NEWS OF THE DISTRICT. An increase of Si in the credit balance of the Manutahi Tennis Club was disclosed in the balance-sheet presented at the annual meeting on Tuesday last. In spite of -the boisterous weather there was a good attendance presided over by Mr. D. M. Jillett. Reference was made to the excellent services rendered during the past season by the club captain and the secretary, Misses M. Calver and E. Lander. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr. H. McCarty; club captain, Mr. H. Cornwall; secretary, Miss E. Lander; ladder committee, secretary, club captain and Mr. D. M. Jillett; general committee, Misses E. Harvie and M. O’Sullivan and Messrs. T. Harvie, W. Barclay and D. M. Jillett. The subscription was fixed at the same rate as last year, and Saturday, November 3, decided upon for the opening of the season.
Appreciation of the excellent way the youthful caretaker had attended to his duties last season was expressed and he was offered the position again this year at the same terms. School Committee Meets.
Messrs. A. B. Muggeridge (chairman), H. Cornwall, R. O. Schwass (secretary) and D. M. Jillett (head teacher) were present at the monthly meeting' of the school committee.
The head teacher reported that the roll had increased to 50 during the month and the attendance was satisfactory. Miss Calver had resumed duties after sick leave since the last meeting. The inspection report for the year was submitted and attention drawn to the fact that a supply of supplementary readers for the infants was recommended. The committee made a grant for the supplementary readers required. _ Arrangements for the calf-judging day were discussed, it being stated that the entries in the calf and lamb-rearing competitions would be almost 50. It was decided to hold a school concert and presentation of prizes on the last Friday of the term.
Cricket Matches. The Alton school cricket team overwhelmed the Manutahi team in a match played on Mr. S. Derby’s paddock on Friday afternoon. Batting first, Alton soon rattled up a score of 89, six of their batsmen having retired. Manutahi was dismissed for four runs, the batsmen proving unable to play the excellent bowling of F. Garret, D. McLennan and A. Foreman. Following on, Manutahi did little better in the. Second strike and was dismissed for 12 runs.
The game to have bebn played at the week-end between the Whenuakura and Manutahi cricket teams had to be postponed on account of bad weather. Personal Items.
Mr. J. B. Hogg, agricultural instructor, visited the Manutahi school on Thursday. Mrs. Chapman has returned to Wanganui after being the guest of Mrs. .A. B. Muggeridge.
