SOUTH TARANAKI GAMES

NON-COMPETITION PLAY MATCHES PLAYED AT HAWERA POWER BOARD'S GOOD SHOWING. Three friendly games were played at Hawera on Saturday as a prelude to the season’s opening next Saturday. A blustering wind made conditions for play difficult, but despite that there were some good performances. Particularly was this so with Power Board, recently elevated to senior A status, which failed by five runs to reach Old Boys’ total of 86. Old Boys won the championship last year, but the young Power Board side played really well. In another match Old Collegians was far too strong for Old Boys B, and Hawera B and High School had a good even tussle. Old Boys batted first against Power Board and scored 86 (W. Barker 20, H. Barker 18, Stevens not out 18). Crotty bowled well to take six for 41, and L£ndrum took two for 11. Thanks to a good stand by Lendrum, 13, and Hughes, 25, Power Board began well, but though Buist collected 14 the others failed and only 81 was scored. Sturrock took three for 26. and Thrush, H. Barker and Herbert two each.

Thanks to a good display from A. Fryer-Raisher, who opened and carried his bat for 44 not out, Old Collegians reached 85 against Old Boys B. Sanson, 12 and Seiwood, 11, were the best of the others. Dowdle, four for 25, was best bowler. Old Boys lasted only nine overs, Mahon taking six for 14 by good bowling and McLean three for 8. Dowdle and Hayman, 8 each, were the top scorers, and the total was 31. Old Boys batted again for a while, scoring 63 for four (Walker 24). Hawera B defeated High School by six wickets, mainly as the result of a second innings collapse on School’s part. Hawera won the toss , and put School in. Lester, opening, played a captain’s innings for a very fine 23 of a total of 65. There were no other double-figure scorers. Stevens three for 13, Kibblewhite two for 3, and Lobban two for 15, were the best bowlers. In reply Hawera B scored 69, Hoskin 26 not out, Longstaff 1.2 and Greenhill 10, being the best scorers, and Lester two for 11, Anderson three for 25, Beauchamp two for 13 and McMillan two for 12, took the wickets. School’s second knock was disastrous, Lester with 10 being the only scorer in a total of 49. Stevens took five for 20 and Fairweather three for 20. Another fine knock by Hoskin for 26, and a good 19 by Edwards gave Hawera the match with six wickets to fall. CRICKET MATCH AT NGAERE. RAWHITIROA VISITORS BEATEN. It was decided that no matches be played on Sundays and no official practices, the club gear not to be available for use to anyone on that day. It was decided to write to the Kapuni, Auroa, Rowan and Kaponga Thursday clubs inviting them to send delegates to a meeting to draw up a series of fixtures for tho season. The president and secretary were appointed the club’s delegates. A vote of thanks to Mr. W. H. Hooper, the retiring secretary, was carried, the president and others referring eulogistically to the work of Mr. Hcspdr.
